7 West Waterford Athletes to compete @123.ie All Ireland Championships

All roads will lead again to Tullamore next weekend where Irelands best young athletes will compete on Day 2 and 3 of the National championships. West Waterford AC is delighted to have seven young athletes qualified for this prestigious event.

Race Walkers Take to the Track  early on Saturday Morning

It will be an early start for our walkers as check in closes @9.15 and the walks get underway on the track @10am. First up will be Eabha Hickey in the under 17 girls followed by her sister Doireann  in the under 18 event and Sophie Beresford in the under 14 walk. The standard of race walking has really risen in Ireland over the past few years and there will be tough competition in all age groups especially from the Connacht athletes who are going through a purple patch at the moment having won both the girls and boys walk at the schools international last weekend. Both Eabha and Doireann have competed at this level before but this will be Sophie’s first All Ireland track competition.

Fia de Paor Competes in the under 16 3000m

Another West Waterford athlete who will compete in her first All Ireland track competition is Fia de Paor who will toe the line in the girls under 16 3000m. This event is due to get underway @3.45 with check in closing at 3pm however depending on the number of heats in the sprint events it made go earlier.

Noah Commins takes on the 1500m on Sunday

Having already competed in the 800m where he finished 5th in a new personal best time of 2.06 Noah Commins will compete over 1500m on Sunday . The 1500m events are due off @11.30 with check in closing @10.30. Noah will face some stiff opposition in this event but will be up for the challenge.

Saoirse and Michalina compete in the Throwing Events

Michalina Goclik will return to Tullamore on Sunday to take part in the under 15 girls Shot event. This is Michalina’s first year competing in athletics and after a great Munster competition were she improved her personal best in both the shot and Discus she qualified for both in the All Ireland. Two weeks ago she finished 6th in the discus with another personal best and next Sunday she will try to emulate that in the Shot event.

Buoyed up by her silver medal winning performance in the discus two weeks ago Saoirse Quinn will be our last competitor in action as she competes in the under 18 Hammer which is down for a 3o’clock start but may go earlier and she will be looking to be among the medal winners in this event.

West Waterford AC wishes the best of luck to all those competing next weekend.

With the conclusion of the National Championships all our athletes will have a break from training and we will be back in action again at the end of August to prepare for the cross country season.
