Munster Championships under 9-13 in CastleIsland on Saturday and Sunday June 10th and 11th

It’s a long trek to Castleisland for our five young athletes who will compete in the Munster Championships under 9-13. On Saturday Ava Kiely and Clodagh Lattimore will compete in the under 13 shot and hurdles and on Sunday Rian Flavin will take part in the under 10 60m and 500m, Jarleth Hurney in the under 11 60m and 600m and Lochlann Hurney in the under 13 Shot and Javelin. This will be a very competitive event but a good learning experience for all those competing. Best of luck to all five athletes.

123.ie All Ireland Schools Championships

Tullamore was the venue last weekend for two fantastic days of schools athletics. The cream of Irish athletics talent was on show over the day days as athletes from all four provinces competed in 124 events in a sun soaked arena in Tullamore. West Waterford AC had five athletes qualified for this prestigious event. Isabelle Gaffney went in the minor girls 800m. The race set off at a blistering pace and was won in 2.09 which was the fastest girls 800m race of the day. Finding herself at the back of the pack after 200m Isabelle came through with a late sprint and finished 4th in 2.17.76. Rory Donnelly was also competing in his first schools All Ireland and is also new to race walking. He had a very good performance in Munster to qualify for the All Ireland and followed that up with 7th place in the All Ireland in a time of 7.24.66. Soairse Quinn competed in both the hammer and discus at intermediate level. The standard at intermediate is always very high and Saoirse finished 9th in the discus with a throw of 26.15 and 9th in the hammer with 33.42. All three athletes were competing for St Augustine’s.

There were two senior athletes in action Doireann Hickey took 5th place in the senior girls walk with a time of 16.31which was considerably faster than her time ion the Munster Championships. Doireann was representing Meanscoil san Nioclas. Our final competitor on the day was Paul Mullarkey representing CBS in the senior boys shot. This was Paul’s final competition in the schools as he sits the Leaving Cert this week. Paul’s best throw was 9.40 which saw him finish in 11th place. Well done to all our athletes who qualified to compete at this event.
