Success for Local Schools at Munster Cross Country
All the local secondary schools were involved in the Munster Schools Cross Country Championships, which was held last Friday in the grounds of C.I.T. The course was well laid out skirting the perimeter of the newly constructed pitches and finishing in front of the new stand. Although the course was flat a strong wind added to the difficulty.  West Waterford athletes were well to the fore in all the events. The best place finisher on the day was Kate Veale. Competing in the colours of St Augustines she was runner up in the intermediate girls race. There were also silver medals in the minor and junior boys for St. Augustines where Seamie Fennell (7th) led home the minors and Robbie Mulligan (7th) led home the juniors. The Ardscoil team that finished second in the senior girls had three West Waterford athletes Rebecca Maher, Kaylee Norris and Claire Collins. C.B.S. Dungarvan also finished second in the senior boys event where Declan Power led them home.

Blackwater C.S. was represented by Lucy O’Brien who finished in 24th in the junior girls race just ahead of Kate Curran Ardscoil in 29th. Richard Stillwell of St. Johns competed in the inter boys where he finished in 24th place and in the same race Lughaidh O’Mahony (st Augustines) was 45th.

Further Awards for Kate Veale
Kate Veale has been announced as the January winner of the Credit Union Award. This is a reward for her performances in January where she broke the Irish junior record for the 3000m walk and also finished runner up in two senior walking events the AAI Games and the national senior indoor championships. For the second year running Kate has also been awarded the Roisin O’Callaghan Trophy for the best juvenile walker in the country and this trophy will be presented at the national awards dinner later in the month.
