First All Ireland Medal for Seamie Fennell
The rerun of the All Ireland under 13 and 15 races was held in Lough Key Forest Park on Sunday last. This time there were no mistakes and it was run on a wide rolling course. The original run in Coleraine had been Seamie Fennell’s first experience at this level and last Sunday he showed he had learned much from that experience. He was up with the leading bunch for the entire race and a one stage headed the field. In a very close finish with less than one second separating second, third and fourth he took fourth place winning his first All Ireland medal added to that was a gold medal as a scoring member of the Munster team that took the inter-provincial honours. This was a great result for a young athlete who only took up the sport last September.

The B championships were held at the same venue and we had two athletes taking part Lucy O’Brien in the under 15 girls and Eoin O’ Brien in the under 13 boys. Lucy finished 7th in her race to claim an individual medal and Eoin finished 60th in his event.

Credit Union Awards
On Saturday last we enjoyed the hospitality of the Waterford combined Credit Unions as they hosted the final of their athletic awards. Each of the monthly winners was presented on stage among them Kate Veale, Thomas Houlihan, Zoe Scanlon and Sinead Flynn of West Waterford. There were short speeches of welcome and thanks to the Credit Unions from the Deputy Mayor of Waterford, Mary Ashe on behalf of the County Board and Caterine Power on behalf of the judges. Guest of Honour on the night was Catriona Mc Kiernan who spoke to the young athletes about motivation, the importance of rest and enjoyment of their sport. A lively questions and answers session followed before the night was rounded off with the announcement of Shane Quinn as overall winner, photographs and light refreshments. Again thanks to the combined credit unions for their continued support of the young athletes in the county.

Training will soon start again for our younger athletes so look out for time and dates next week.
