Top Three Finish for Robbie Mulligan and Kate Veale
We had an early start on Sunday last as we headed to Tralee for the second section of the Munster cross country championships under 9, 11, 13, 15, 17 and 19. Thankfully the Sunday dawned bright and crisp but the rains on Saturday had left their mark and the course was very soft underfoot with parts of it especially around the starting lines very muddy. Our young athletes were not deterred by the conditions and gave wholehearted performances in the tough conditions. Top finisher was Kate Veale who despite a bad start battled her way through the field to finish second in the under 17 girls race. Top placed of the boys was Robbie Mulligan who ran strongly throughout the race staying in the leading group and a sprint to the line saw him finish in third place.

Cian O’ Riordan best of under 9’s
The under 9 boys and girls found the muddy start and the large n umbers a bit daunting but once the races got under way they got stuck in. Cian O’ Riordan ran a great race to finish 15th in the under 9 boys while Kellie Mulhearne was the best of the girls in 37th.

Third County for under 11 girls
The under 11 girls had the worst of the weather for their race as there was a heavy shower just as they lined up to start, but as many of them had been in action for their schools in the terrible rain on Saturday they were not put off by a shower. Four of West Waterford’s young athletes were scoring members of the county team that collected the bronze medals in the inter county competition. They were Chloe Fennell, Bronagh Condon, Rachel Mc Guickan and Caoimhe Dwyer. In the club competition West Waterford finished 5th with just one point separating 4th and 5th teams.

Individual medal for Micheal Power
For the second year in a row Micheal Power finished in the top twelve and collected an individual medal. His younger brother Jerome moved up a year as did Aidan O’ Brien and both ran very well in the testing conditions. Eoin Ryan improved on his performance in the county championships to take the fourth scoring spot on the team.
West Waterford finished 4th in the  inter club competition and Waterford also finished 4th in the inter county event.

Bronze in Club and County Contests for under 13 girls
Sinead Flynn was another of West Waterford’s individual medal winners when she finished 7th in the under 13 event. This performance coupled with a good run by Cliona Ryan laid the foundation for a team performance that saw West Waterford take third place in the inter club competition. Sinead, Cliona, Kate Mc Grath and Sarah Wyley were all scoring members of the Waterford team that finished third in the inter county competition.

Great Run by Seamie Fennell
Newcomer Seamie Fenell ran with great determination in the boys under 13 event and earned himself an individual medal when he finished 7th. Tholm Reddy was next to finish making it into the top thirty.  All the team ran strongly and just missed out qualification by two points as the county finished in 5th place with the club team finishing 6th.

Waterford fourth in under 15 and 17 Age Groups
In the older groups Waterford finished fourth in the under 15 girls, under 17girls and under 17 boys. Lucy O’ Brien scored on the under 15 team while all four of our under 17 girl and boys scored on their respective teams.

Individual Medal for Declan Power
In the last race of the day the under 19 boys Declan Power became the sixth athlete from West Waterford to win an individual medal when he finished 9th after a strong race. Brian Hallissey just missed out as he finished 13th in the same event.
