The annual juvenile Colligan Cup was held on Sunday last. This year we were delighted to welcome our new sponsor Albert Mc Grath. The McGrath family have a long-standing involvement with West Waterford athletic club both at senior and juvenile level. Albert was on hand to present the prizes to the winners at the end of the race. Sixty-three athletes took part in the race and the estimated times varied from 8m 18secs to 16m 30secs. The clock started at 16.30 and each athlete started at his or her own time. The first person home was Cormac Mahony who completed the course in 12m 22 over 2m 38secs faster than he predicted. In all twenty-eight athletes ran faster than they estimated. So close was the finish that fourteen athletes were within ten seconds of their estimated time and Michael Shine was just one second ahead of his predicted time. When the clock struck zero the first home was Bobby Landers at just 3secs outside his estimated time. Next home was Sean Curran just six seconds outside his time and the other prize winners on the day were Liam Reilly, Ross Brown and Alex Lai. Kate Veale who ran the course in 8mins 10secs recorded the fastest time of the day. Only two others went under nine minutes David Earley in 8m 32s and Gavin Whelan in 8m 51.
