Success for Local Athletes at Kit Kat Munster Schools Championships
There was success aplenty for local schools at last Saturday Kit Munster Schools Championships. St. Augustines, Ard Scoil na nDeise, C.B.S. and St. Declans all had athletes in the winners enclosure. The first victory came early in the day when Kate Veale representing St. Augustines was a clear winner of the Junior Girls Walk and her time of 5.33 was faster than that recorded by the junior boys in the next event. Later in the day Kate added silver in the 1500m. Kate Hickey brought a gold and silver medal home to St. Declans.  In the Junior Discus she added almost two mts to her personal best and throwing over 30mts for the first time she finished in second place.  Later on she took the gold medal in the Minor Girls Shot improving her throw in each round to finish with 8m.52cms.

New recruit to West Waterford Justin Campbell St Augustines won the Minor Shot with a throw of 10m12cms.  He also won a bronze medal in the Junior Discus. Meg Fitzgerald showed the progress she has made since last year with a gold medal winning performance in the Inter Girls Hammer

The Houlihans dominated the pole vault, Laurence won the Junior Boys, Thomas the Intermediate Boys and Lisa the Intermediate Girls and Lisa also finished third in the 80m Hurdles and Triple Jump.  Katie Laffen won the Junior Girls Pole Vault and Leanne Herlihy second and Dana Dudakova third made it a clean sweep for the Friary. In the Senior Girls event Aisling Fennell got the better of Emma Dunne.

On the track silver medals were won by Jim Curran C.B.S. in the Inter Steeplechase and Rebecca Maher Ard Scoil in the under 16 mile. Zoe Scanlon also representing Ardscoil took silver in the Inter Discus.   Colin Dunford C.B.S. finished the day with a silver and bronze in the Minor Boys 800m and 100m and there were also silver medals won by St Augustine’s Rory Moloney in the Senior Boys 5000m and Patrick Palmer in the Inter Boys pole Vault. Patrick went on to finish third in the Triple Jump.

Claire Collins Ard Scoil had to equal her personal best jump of 1m50 to finish in third place in the Inter Girls High Jump and Clodagh Gallagher Ard Scoil also claimed a bronze medal in the under 16 mile.

The next step for these young athletes will be the Kit Kat All Ireland Schools Championships, which will be held in Tullamore next weekend, and we look forward to seeing some of them again among the medal winners.
