First International Success for Zoe Scanlon
At the Celtic International held last weekend in Belfast Zoe Scanlon became the latest West Waterford athlete to taste international success when she secured first place in the girls under 16 Discus. Zoe’s winning throw was 31m 19cm, which was an excellent throw for this age group. Her win helped Ireland to secure victory in this annual quadrangular match between Ireland Scotland Wales and Ulster. Ireland also won the under 18 girls and although they finished second in both boys matches the combined total of both girls and boys events gave Ireland victory overall. A late call up to the under 16 team was Lisa Houlihan who competed in the girls relay which finished a very close fourth. There was also a fourth place finish in the under 18 Pole Vault for Patrick Palmer who suffered a nasty fall in his warm up jumps and did well to compete in the event.

Lisa Houlihan travelled from Belfast to Tullamore to compete in the multi events. She had a good win in the hurdles and shot and finished on a total of 2374 points giving her fifth place overall.

Araglin Open Sports
A group of twenty athletes travelled to compete in Araglin open sports on Wednesday July 25th. This annual event has proved very popular with our young athletes down through the years and the carnival atmosphere lends a festive spirit to the night. It is a pity that so many of these open sports have died off in the last few years. Caoimhe Dwyer got the night off to a great start with a win in the sprint and she followed this up with another win in the 300m. Her brother Eoin was on the winning relay team under12 and took the individual bronze in the sprint. Newcomer Dermot Ryan had an exciting start to his athletic career with a great double in the sprint and 600m. Kate Hickey and Siobhan Nugent made it a one, two for West Waterford in the under 14 shot where they were both almost a metre ahead of the rest of the field. There was also a one two in the high jump with Claire Collins winning ahead of Rebecca Maher. There were some very close and exciting finishes in the relays where all four teams finished second. Well done to all who competed on the night.
