Dungarvan to Host Kit Kat Munster Schools Cross Country

All roads lead to the Friary next Saturday where the Kit Kat Munster Schools cross country gets under way at 12.30. There will be eight races in all starting with minors and going right through to senior. Local interest will centre on the senior races with the host school favourite to take the title in the senior boys race. They will be led by David Mc Carthy , the favourite for the individual title who last week at the county championships became the first athlete to win all six individual titles in six years . David won the Minor back in 2002 the junior in 2003 the intermediate in 2004 and again in 2005 and the senior in 2006 and last week he completed the set with the 2007 championship. David will have the support of Diarmuid O’Foghlu Mark Shalloe and Ferdia O’Aodha to make up a very strong scoring team. In the senior girls the Ardscoil will be looking for their first title at this level having finished third in 2005 and second in 2006. Shona Curran is back in top form and Elma Nugent has been running well all season and they will be supported by Niamh O’ Riordan Jenny Hurley and Emer Scanlan. In the Intermediate boys Daniel Mc Carthy will represent the Friary while Tom and Jim Curran Brian Hallissey and Gavin Whelan compete for the CBS all five are very young first year intermediates and the distance they are running is much longer than they run in their age at club level so they will face a tough task to qualify for the All Irelands. In the intermediate girls Lorraine Mc Carthy (St. Augustines) should be among the individual medal winners while in the Minor boys David Early, Lughiadh O’ Mahony and Darragh O’ Riordan should be all well able for the pace and distance of this race. The Ursuline Waterford were very strong in the Minor and Junior events at the County Championships and should be among the medal winners in this age groups. Last years winner of the Junior boys Shane Quinn is still a Junior this year and should have a comfortable win in this event and could lead his De La Salle team mates to the team title. It should make for a very interesting afternoon of cross-country running.

Juvenile Club AGM

Due to a clash with the county board meeting the AGM of the juvenile club has been postponed and will now be held on Monday 26th of February in Minnies at 9pm.

Training: Our indoor circuit training sessions on Tuesday evening have proved very popular with our older athletes and have been very well attended. Those training for the schools cross country are training with Tony on Monday and Fridays at the Friary @ 6.30 and in Colligan at the week end. Sandra continues to work with our high jumpers at the Ardscoil on Thursday while Bro Patrick is working away with the pole vaulters.
