OUTSTANDING DAY 32ND ANNUAL JOHN TREACY DUNGARVAN 10 MILE ROAD RACE.
For the 32nd time our club hosted the Annual John Treacy Dungarvan 10 mile road race and thankfully with a huge behind the scenes operation in place the event once again was a huge success with over 3.000 athletes descending on the old Boro from early Saturday onwards the town was a bustling haven of runners over two days with every bed and restaurant full to capacity. The race is now the largest 10 mile road race on the island of Ireland a fact that we are most proud of and it’s also the largest sporting participation event in Waterford county and city . but of course it took years of dedicated work over many years with great help from many along the way to make this a must run event now on the Irish athletics road running calendar.The weather is always a factor this time of year but last Sunday we couldn’t have asked for a better one with good temperatures no rain or wind in fact it was ideal for the runners.Once again this year our cry for help fell on many ears with over 100 stewards putting their name’s forward to give us our yearly dig out.All your help was really and truly appreciated and every person no matter what their role was at the event your help made the day what it was, a superb day for our club and for our town. The race was got underway by our horary starter Liz Treacy Bullen who was the inaugural winner of this race 32 years ago in 1992, it was great to have Liz along as the first winner and of course she is also twin sister to the man which this race honours the great John Treacy. Liz got the race under way from the Youghal Road on the button of 11 AM as our wheelchair participant Gerry Ford Blarney headed off on the short town circuit followed by the thousands of runners behind. It was a sight to behold as the huge field made its way on the short 1 mile town loop before heading for the country.This year once again for the 8th year we had the services of Myrunresults a professional chip timing company, this took a lot of pressure off our timing crew and we thank myrunresults for their professionalism and having the results out in the fastest time imaginable. West Waterford athletic club were fortunate also once again this year to have on board our race associate sponsors. Flahavans, Nike Ireland,AIB Bank, Intersport Elverys, The Country Stores Dungarvan,Kevin Forde Daybreak Dungarvan, Along with much help from Cappoquin Logistics, Eurofins . Along with a host of other local businesses who supported the event in so many ways. To Waterford city and county council, Josephine Mc Grath, John Leonard and all the staff for their invaluable help ensuring that the course was in top order for the race we are most grateful.To all the staff at Dungarvan Sports Centre who accommodated our goody bag packing Saturday. To all who donated to and helped to pack the goodie bags on Saturday many thanks. Thanks to everyone to many to mention for their help with the clean-up. Thanks to all on duty at the start line and finish line crew they did brilliant all weekend. Thanks to Dr O Mahony and our nurse Jenny Muntjewerff for their invaluable help on the day To Liam O Donnell on van duty and our PA man Martin Drake .Dirk Baumann and his crew for their superb sound system and music. A very special mention to three people who we simply couldn’t operate without, for their work with the traffic management and practical help leading up to race day and on the day itself and that’s Conor Norris, John Mc Grath and Jamie Mills, many thanks lads. Thanks to Dungarvan Cycling club for all their invaluable assistance also and to our own Juvenile club members and committee for all their help. To Johnny O’Connor who manned the clock at the 5 mile mark. We must extend our sincere thanks to all at Dungarvan Garda for their continued support with this and all our events, the Garda role is vital to the success of this race and they are always most helpful and understanding in their dealings with us. Thanks to the Medicore for their professionalism and for making the trip to Dungarvan for the event, these are a vital cog in the success of this event and as have been proven we are in safe hands when this crew are involved. There are many other people to thank for their help on the day especially all the many stewards out on the course whom without we couldn’t possibly have held the event at all, Motor bike out riders and our friends at DCC also and of course Karen Ryan who had the unenviable task of coordinating the whole stewarding operation for the day, Karen you did brilliant as you usually do. Thanks to all our pacers who are dab hands at it now and to Ann who coordinated here.Finally, a huge thank you to our club committee who worked tirelessly under the stewardship of a great chairman Tom Leahy for all the work put in again this year and of course the lady whose hand is on the overall controls for the event, Ann Dunford , Ann once again left no stone unturned in her efforts in what was a flawless event. OISÍN SPILLANE RECORDS SUPERB WIN IN DUNGARVAN 10.
The weather hugely played a big part in the success of the race with ideal conditions for all participants. Looking through the elite race favourite’s Saturday night it was looking like a wide open affair this year with no stand out favourite. With a huge scattering of athletes from all corners of the country the spoils this year went West as our winner crossing the finish line in 51.56 came from the country Clare and Ennis Track AC to be persist Oisín Spillane who was making his very first trip done here for the event will now have his name engraved in the history books along with the other 32 previous winners of this prestige race .Our 2nd man home was from Limerick club Bilboa AC John Kinsella with a time of 52.00, John was closing fast on our early leader from Clare but the finish line came in the nick of time for Oisín with the fast finishing John hot on his tail over the final couple of kilometres.Third finisher was from the South Dublin club Brothers Pearse Leuan Hopkins 52.32 and he was followed by his club mate Eddie O’Connor 4th in 52.44.First Waterford man home was Pat Fitzgerald Waterford AC 5th with a time of 52.56.We had a comprehensive list of category prize winners also and many in brilliantly fast times all listed below, these prizes will be posted out to the winners asap. Big thanks to our team of race day pacers who all did a brilliant job getting runners to reach their particular race goal. There was a big mix of clubs from all over the country again this year and was a great to see athletes from clubs far and near compete, well done to one and all, see you all in 2025 for our 33rd outing !

CIARA WILSON TAKES A RESOUNDING VICTORY AT JOHN TREACY DUNGARVAN 10 MILE.
On her very first visit to the John Treacy Dungarvan 10 Ciara Wilson DMP AC Wexford in a time of 59.14 took a resounding victory for the 2024 edition of the race, Ciara was the only Female athlete to break the 60 minute mark on the day. Sally Forristal St Joseph’s AC Kilkenny came home 2nd just outside the hour mark in 1.00.10, Sally no stranger to this event and many of our races as she is a regular participant in our club races. Making the long journey from Dublin was our 3rd finisher with Cristin Scollard Dublin City Harriers A.C. again just outside the hour mark in 60.12 with Dee Grady Ennis Track AC Clare 4th 61.18 and our 5th placed Female was Noémie Leduc Grange Fermoy A.C. with a time of 01:02:05.The age categories were as keenly contested as ever and it was brilliant to see so many Ladies taking on the 10 mile distance, whatever your time or position we are sure that everyone enjoyed the day and the experience and we hope to see you all back in 2025 when we will line up for the 33rd edition of the race.

This year’s men’s winners were Brother Pearse AC in an accumulative time of 2.41.20.The Women title for 2024 goes to St Finbarrs AC , with an excellent Ladies team in 3.20.17

6.000 EURO DONATED TO KBRT BY THE RUNNERS OF THE DUNGARVAN 10.
For the 9th year this year we donated monies from the race to a charity. The KBRT (Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust was the chosen charity for 2024 and we were delighted that you the runners through your generosity and monies donated form the race itself donated 6.000 euro. The monies raised for this most worthy charity who do great in bringing loved ones back from foreign shores under extremely difficult times for families. Our thanks to Colin Bell came along on Sunday and was presented with the cheque on behalf of the race organisers and all the runners who donated to the cause.
ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL 29th ANNUAL FORDES DAYBREAK WINTER LEAGUE CONCLUDES.
It finished as it started great weather great numbers and fun all the way as for the 29th time the country’s oldest and original winter running league has come to an end after 10 Wednesday nights of great running around the street of our great town. The prize-winners were presented with their prizes by league sponsor Kevin Forde of Fordes Daybreak at a great prize presentation and celebration night held at the Park Hotel last Sunday night. Our thanks to Kevin for his generous sponsorship of the league. Also once again i would like to thank the many stewards and helpers that make these leagues possible. The main stay of its success we feel is the fact that it’s open to all and brings together the elite as well as the fun runner and this is what has made it appealing for so many years, the league has never been won by the fastest runner in any of the 29 years of its existence. DUNGARVAN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE PRIZES ON THE DOUBLE THIS WEEK.
Our sincere thanks to Dungarvan Chamber of Commerce who came on board to sponsor a spot prize( €25 each) at the Fordes Daybreak winter league. This week we had a double week so two vouchers were awarded to the two distances.Dungarvan Chamber of Commerce do superb work in representing the businesses and retailers of our town. This week’s voucher winners were long course Clodagh Stapleton and Brendan Kent and on the short course this last week or winners were Michael Cummins and Elaine Horgan.
