28th ANNUAL MURRAY’S CAREPLUS PHARMACY BRICKEY 5K.
The 28th Annual Murray’s Careplus Pharmacy sponsored Brickey 5K Run/Walk was held last Sunday in what turned out to be a very nice morning despite the heavy rainfall earlier in the morning.. The Brickey GAA grounds was the race HQ and a good turnout of runners 110 and the largest turnout of walkers ever taking part came along on the day to support the event which was encouraging to see with all proceeds going to this year’s recipients Carriglea and Glenbeg National schools in the area. Our sincere thanks to all concerned with the event as they had everything running like clockwork on the morning with special thanks to Noel Hogan for his work behind the scenes on the race and the assistance by plenty of willing stewards whose help was invaluable on the morning. All great events need great sponsors and we have been fortunate again this year to have Murray’s Careplus Pharmacy Dungarvan on board, a huge thanks to the Murray family for the wonderful prizes presented. We would especially like to thank Elma Drea of Murrays Careplus Pharmacy who came along on the day to present the winning prizes Thanks to Liam on van duty and Conor who looked after signage etc.and to Gerry who marked the course. At the prize presentation the club chairman Tom Leahy thanked all who came along to run and those who took part in the walk also he thanked all who helped with the race especially all the stewards and our own West Waterford AC crew who once again did an excellent job, Ann ,Tom,Ray and Declan had the results out pronto.Our thanks to PJ Curran who came along to present the Martin Curran memorial Cup to the men’s winner and to Natasha Granddaughter and Nathan Great grandson who presented the Jim Lyons memorial shield to our ladies winner. A special thank you go to the ladies who looked after the refreshments after the race, they saw that everyone were well looked after with tea coffee and lovely treats. THE MARTIN CURRAN MEMORIAL CUP GOES TO EVAN FITZGERALD .
A regular over the past two years to many of our club races and winner of most Clonmel’s Evan Fitzgerald made his first visit to the Brickey valley a successful one last Sunday when he sailed home in what was the 2nd fastest time recorded ever on this course 15.29, one has to go back to 2013 to find that Colm Sheehan of Leevale AC our winner that day ran a time of 15.25 so only 4 seconds outside last Sunday but none the less Evan was our gun to finish line winner and was presented with the famed Martin Curran perpetual cup for his 1st time. Raivis Zakis West Waterford AC a former winner of this race finished 2nd in a time of 17.26 ,Raivis was also 2nd man home in 2022 and in 3rd place last Sunday was Alan Gibson IND with a time of 18.12.Thsi year we had thanks to our sponsor category prizes and here the over 40 went to Jim Henneberry IND 1911,Alan Cullen West Waterford AC 20.04,James Whelan West Waterford AC took the over 50 while his team mate Ray Hahesy was our over 55 winner.Well done to all.

KATE VEALE RETAINS THE JIM LYONS MEMORIAL SHIELD.
The ladies race saw some fast times recorded with club international race walker who also supports most of the clubs road races Kate Veale coming out the clear winner this year as she did in 2022 with a solid time of 19.11, this was Kate’s 3rd time winning this race as she also won it in 2015/22, Kate currently is training for the upcoming national marathon distance relay walk championships to be held in late December so it’s good to see her out running for the club when she gets an opportunity to do so. West Waterford AC Ladies showed a very strong hand last Sunday winning 5 of the 7 prize categories on offer and the club filled the top 3 placing’s as after Kate was Eveleen Drohan recording a time of 20.16 and excellent run by her and 3rd place going to Angela Tobin who ran the Masters cross country in Tramore last Sunday, Angela’s time was 20.43.The over 35 category winner was Aoife McGrath IND 27.32.Over 40 went to Sharon Higgins 26.44 West Waterford AC who two weeks ago ran Dublin Marathon and last week did the Paul Brunnock 50k ultra and this week a handier distance of 5k ,The over 45 winner was Fiona Nyhan IND 23.32 and finally our winner over 50 was Sandra Moore West Waterford AC 23.52.well done to all.

29th ANNUAL FORDE’S DAYBREAK WINTER LEAGUE STARTS THIS EVENING.
ARE YOU UP OR THE CHALLENGE?
There was a great turn out last Wednesday night for our number collection night for this year’s winter league, our thanks to all those runners who registered online and who came along last week to register it will take a lot of pressure off our registration volunteers for tonight. The 29th year of the event kicks off tonight Wednesday with round one of the 11 week league with the traditional 2 week break over Christmas. Remember you have to register online for the winter league and if you didn’t manage to get down to collect your number last week you can of course come along and and collect it tonight or remember you can go online and register for the league at any point you wish. Both the long course and the short course will both remain the same as last year and both will be stewarded. We of course want each and every runner to come along and enjoy the event but of safety for all is paramount to the league success, with this in mind we ask all runners to please obey the organisers and stewards at all times, they are there for our safety and if we can keep each other safe out on the road it will add greatly to our enjoyment at the event. The main aim of the winter league is and has been for all of 29 years is to promote health and fitness through running, especially for those that have never ran before. If it’s your first winter league we are there to help you in any way that we can, indeed the league itself is structured in such a way that it’s ideally set up for all no matter what your standard of fitness is as our league handicap system which is used has the total beginner in mind. The first night of the league will get under way at 6.40 tonight when our great sponsor Kevin Forde of Fordes Daybreak on the Youghal road will fire the starter’s pistol announcing the start of this year’s league sending the large field of runners on their way in the traditional first night mass start.

SAFETY ON THE ROADS IS PARAMOUNT TO THE SUCCESS OF THE WINTER LEAGUE.
The first rule of safety when running on the road is that all runners must wear their reflective bib at all times. Bibs can be bought at any sports shop or hardware shop. We must obey the stewards at all times. They are there for our own safety and are not to be ignored. Please be wary of traffic at all times but especially when crossing the road or overtaking somebody.

UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES WILL ANY RUNNER BE ALLOWED TO TAKE PART IN THE WINTER LEAGUE WITHOUT A REFLECTIVE BIB. 32nd ANNUAL JOHN TREACY DUNGARVAN 10 ENTRIES OPEN ON DECEMBER 1ST FOR AI MEMBERS.
As and from December 1st entries will open to Athletics Ireland club members for the 32nd Annual John Treacy Dungarvan 10 which will be held on Sunday February 4th 2024, with a start time of 11 pm. West Waterford Athletic Club have announced details of the event which has established itself as a must run race on the Irish road running calendar with participants from all four corners of the country and beyond participating. The race has grown year on year and is a pre entry race which will close when 3,500 entries is reached. The John Treacy Dungarvan 10 brings together the ideal race combination of fun runners, joggers, club athletes and top class internationals who compete over a fast flat 10 mile course around the historic town of Dungarvan, we look forward to welcoming you to our town on February 4th 2024. So remember entries open December 1st.

WATERFORD HOSPICE TO BENEFIT FROM 15th ANNUAL AN SEAN PHOBAL TURKEY TROT.
On Sunday December 10th the 15th Annual Cleanzone Technologies Ltd sponsored Paddy Joe Curran Old Parish Turkey Trot 5 mile run and 4 mile walk will take place at the Marine Bar, Pulla, Dungarvan. All proceeds from this year’s event will go to Waterford Hospice. The event is once again kindly sponsored by Cleanzone Technology Ltd of which were most grateful. The 4 mile walk will begin at 11 am, while the 5 mile run will get under way at 11.30. GOLD FOR JOE GOUGH AT BRITISH AND IRISH MASTERS CROSS COUNTRY.
The British and Irish Masters Cross Country International was held yesterday Saturday at the beautiful Tollcross Park,Glasgow. A large contingent of Irish Masters were in action which covered all masters age categories from over 35 up to over 75 in both Ladies and with the Ladies circuit over 6k and the Men covering a distance of 8k .West Waterford’s Joe Gough was in action in the over 70 category and here he showed that he presently is unbeatable over all terrains, whether indoor track, outdoor track on the road and now over the cross country discipline he seems invincible in his age category. Joe took silver in this event last year when on that occasion the event was held in Santry Demesne Dublin. This year in Glasgow Joe want one better taking the individual gold with the Irish team finishing with the bronze team medals on 32 points behind England 22 points and Scotland 29 points .The other Irish scoring team members were Joe 1st,Martin Kerr 10th and Alan Doyle 15th. This was Joe’s first ever individual gold at this event beating the runner-up David Butler of England the pre-race favourite according to Athletics Weekly and Tony Martin Scotland winner for the last two years who took bronze this year. Another great notch in the belt of team Gough.
West Waterford Athletes at Irish University Road Relay Championships
The Irish University Road Relay Championships were held in Maynooth last Friday and 3 West Waterford athletes were in action.In the ladies Lucy Holmes was on the Munster Technological University placed 8th of the 26 teams competing Mark Blackwell competing with UL C team who finished 20th team from the 51 competing while Gearoid Coffey was on the UL D team who finished 33rd team.Well done to Mark,Gearoid and Lucy.
