MICHAEL ROCHE CARPETS SPRING SERIES.
SUCCESSFUL EVENT DRAWS TO A CLOSE.
The Eason’s Dungarvan 10 k last Sunday week saw the end of this years four race Michael Roche carpets spring series, The series got under way in early February with the Dunphy Vivas Health Dungarvan 10 and was followed by the Kiely Monumental Colligan Cup, then the Bausch and Lomb Kilmacthomas 5 and finally last Sunday week the Eason’s Dungarvan 10k.
The League this year witnessed one of the largest entries for many years with a total of 105 entries from clubs such as West Waterford AC, Waterford AC, Clonmel AC, St.Mary’s AC, Co.Clare, Carrick On Suir AC, St Senans AC among the entries received. There were nine men’s divisions down for decision and four ladies divisions. An athlete’s best three finishes from the four events were counted with the lowest score best. Many of the divisions were only decided on at the final race and some were very close with only a point or two separating the winners from the second placed finishers. This series kindly sponsored by Michael Roche Carpets was ideal for fun runner and club runner alike and with so many divisions available it gave all standards a chance of being involved as divisional winners.
The overall title winner this year with a total of 15 points, was Raivis Zakis who recorded two wins The Kilmac 5 and in the Dungarvan 10k, he also finished 13th in the Dungarvan 10 miler, Raivis finished second in this series last year and fourth the year before that so it was a delighted Raivis that claimed this year’s title the Michael Roche Carpets spring series winner for 2008.Raivis is involved in all aspects of the club and no week goes by when he’s not among the prize winners somewhere either in a club competition or elsewhere representing the club and wearing his club colours with pride. A deserving winner of these years Michael Roche spring series no doubt.
Our friends from the city running with Waterford AC’s Billy Maguire finished in second place this year with a total of 45 points, Billy’s team mates Brendan Aspel and Larry Kennedy filled third and fourth with 54 and 64 points respectively and 5th place in the top division was taken by West Waterford ‘s Tom O’Brien with 77 points. Well done to the top 5 Men it was good to see many new faces involved in division one this year.
In division 2 of the league saw a clean sweep from series organising club West Waterford AC who claimed all five placings, The winner here was Philip Harty with a total of 79 point from last year’s division 2 winner Gerry Cantwell who had to settle for the runner up spot this year, Gerry finished on 85 points with Martin Hayes 3rd on 91 points.
Patrick O’Riordan held off the challenge of Joe Kelly to claim division 3 with 116 points with Joe finishing on 125 points third place in this division was claimed by Declan McGrath 153 with points.
Division 4 saw one of the closest divisions of the whole series with victory going to Vincent Tuttty who finished on 171 points just 10 ahead of his former neighbour Billy Coleman with 181 points and third place went to Anthony Dwyer only another four points behind Billy on 184 points
Conor Murray with 206 points claimed division 5 from Ron Fawkes who was second with 224 points Tomas Coleman was third with 239 in this division.
Division 6 was won by Clonmel’s Niall McCarthy with a total of 263 points and this was the closest division of the entire series as new comer to the local running scene Hugh Walsh in his first series also finished on 263 points with Niall taking the title as he had a higher placing in the Dungarvan 10k, third place in this division went to Noel Drohan with 274 points.
Division 7 was won by soon to be Ultra athlete Paul Brunnock with a total of 303 points from Pat Dunford who finished on 322 points Gary McCormack was third on 359.50-year-old Tom Moroney was our winner in division 8.Tom finished with 405 points from Pearse Moloney second with 431 points and Declan Harte was third on 469 points. The final men’s division saw Tom Leahy take the title with 533 points from Dermot Moran who finished up with 578 points and Dermot Ryan was third on 601.
DIANE CLAIMS TITLE.
Local athlete Diane Behan from the series host club West Waterford was the victor in the Ladies section from Mary Burke Waterford AC who filled the runners up position this year. With the help of a couple of great performance in the series this year Diane was a deserving Ladies overall winner of the Michael Roche Carpets Spring Series for 2008, Diane finished with a total of 60 points to claim the top slot from Mary who is also a much improved athlete this year, Mary finished with 99 points. Third place in division 1 was claimed by Norma Wall with 172 points, Norma will be pleased with her performance here as she moved up two placings from last years series when she finished 5th,fourth was Brigid Coffey who is really making great strides this spring her times are improving with every outing, Brigid had 206 points and the final placing in the top division saw Corinna Walsh in 5th place with 233 points. Division 2 saw a Waterford AC athlete Brea Cooke take first place with 262 points from Carrick’s Ann Cronin who finished with 271 points and Anne Whelan recent joint winner of Master athlete of the year in West Waterford only one point behind the Carrick Lady when finishing third with 272 points.
Division three for the Ladies was won by Margaret Power with 377 points from Mary Riordan 41 points and here Amanda Mansfield was third on 420 points .The final divisions was division four and this was claimed by Clare Walsh with a total points tally of 462,Clare had just two points to spear over the second placed athlete Ann Dunford who is the other half of the Master Female athlete of the year 2007 winner. Ann had 464 points with Triona Wall third on 530 points.

MASON MORTGAGES AND FINANCIAL SERVICES FIT4LIFE COLLIGAN LEAGUE STARTS WEDNESDAY NEXT 19TH MARCH.
After another very successful Winter league under our belts and the winter months now more or less behind us, our thoughts turn to one of the years first leagues the popular Mason Mortgages and Financial services Fit4life Colligan league, Yes folks it back to action Wednesday March 19th for the start of the four week Colligan league. As the logo goes “don’t go out to grass go out to Colligan”A good turn out is expected when the round one will get under way at 6 .15 pm for the start of the league which is a league ideal for all levels of runners from beginners and regular runners, to the elite. The club would like to sincerely thank Mark Mason for his kind sponsorship of the event again this year, Marks company is situated at Abbey Glen, Mellary Road, Cappoquin We will of course as is the case with all our events, catered for all with a five mile run over the hilly circuit for regulars and the 2.5 mile run on the flat we are also continuing with the 5 mile on the flat run which proved so popular when introduced to the league two year’s ago for the first time. Entry fee each night is 2 Euro, and all are welcome once they are over 16 years of age, We would especially encourage newcomers to come along and join in the fun, The overall winner of the league will receive the Veale family perpetual shield, The league will continue for four Wednesday March 19th -26th April 5th and finishing on 12th. The overall winner of the league will receive the Veale family perpetual shield which is currently held by Sean Stilwell, who is reigning king of the hill’s, He has won the league now for the last two years in the Men’s 5 miler and Norma Wall is the current queen of the same hill in the Ladies section, a title she has won two years in succession In the 5 mile on the flat circuit the titleholder is Declan McGrath while the Ladies titleholder is Corinna Walsh. Joe Gough won last years 2.5-mile league while Emer Scanlon is the titleholder of the Ladies 2.5 mile run. Indeed Emer has won this league for the past two years, can she make it three from three.
RAIVIS ZAKIS WINS PADDY JOE DELANEY MEMORIAL SHIELD AT BALLYCOTTON 10 FOR THE THIRD TIME.
West Waterford AC runners made the Annual pilgrimage to the 31st Annual Ballycotton 10 mile road race last Sunday which was race number 3 in the John Buckley sports sponsored Munster 10 mile classic series. Weather wise the runners were somewhat lucky as all indications from the weather man weren’t good, But even he can sometimes be wrong and thankfully he got it very wrong for the Ballycotton event as glorious sunshine greeted the 2000 plus runners to the East Cork Village last Sunday. That said the breeze was quite strong and was into the face of the runners over the first half of the course but was of assistance for the second half as they made their way back up the famous Ballycotton hill to the finish line at the top of the village. With that head wind of course fast times were never on the cards. But most of the 2,204 finishers were not too bothered about the head wind they were in Ballycotton to participate in what is one of the most loved road events on the circuit. The race got under way, as is tradition by honouree race starter Dan McCarthy. And it was sight to behold as the field made its way down the winding road for the 31st Edition of the classic Ballycotton 10.The first mile was covered in 4.50 and a lead group of six quickly emerged Alan O’Shea Bantry AC last years winner, Vinny Mulvey Raheny Shamrocks who was recently third in the National cross country championships, Sergiu Turea Clonliffe Harriers recent winner of our own Dunphy Vivas health Dungarvan 10 miler, Cillian O’Leary Raheny Shamrocks, John Eves Dundrum South Dublin and Thomas Carey Limerick. This group stayed together for all of the first two miles, which they went through in a time of 9.56 sharing the lead between them. However the toddle was soon to be over as Rahenys Vinny Mulvey decided he had enough of the company of the other athletes and upped the pace to stretch the field out all in about a 600-meter stretch of the country road as the leaders headed for the famed Ballymaloe House
The leader Mulvey kept up his strong pace into the head wind and was all of 200 meters clear of his rivals by the time the race reached Ballymaloe House at this stage victory was written all over the slight framed but big hearted Dubliner.Mulvey passed the 5 mile mark in a time of 25.30.At this stage it was a matter of who was going to be second and here too a battle royal in sued with Bantry’s Alan O’ Shea starting to fade back the field his recent injury worries obviously still lingering, Turea, O’Leary and Eves were all with in 40 meters of each other. By the eight mile Mulvey had his substantial lead intact and it was the Moldavian athlete running with Clonliffe Harriers Turea who emerged from the pack of three to surge into a second place position as they approached the final hilly stretch before mile nine. Mulvey crossed the line a convincing winner to the delight of his supporters in a good time of 50.37, which was faster than the winning time of last year. He can now add this success last Sunday to his third placing in the previous weeks national cross country championships in Belfast and of course his recent win on home turf in the Raheny 5 mile which he won in a very fast 23.37 some weeks ago. Vinny’s next outing will be the World cross country championships in Edinburgh on March 30th.He also lead his club team Raheny Shamrocks to team honours last Sunday bridging a 29 years gap since they last won this team title. A depleted West Waterford team through injuries were the holders of this award from last years race. Sergiu Turea held on for the famous second placing 51.06 a little slower than his 50.18 winning time in Dungarvan 6 weeks earlier. A strong last mile from Raheny’s Cillian O’Leary who in creditably was only 14th in this race last year, saw him claim 3rd in 51.21.Killian is a much improved athlete in that 12 month period as he is also finished runner up in both the National Novice and Intermediate cross country this year. John Eves was 4th 51.21,last years winner Alan O’Shea on this occasion had to settle for 5th place in a time of 52.12.From a West Waterford point of view it was Raivis Zakis who was first cross the line in 7th place with a time of 52.42,Our only other prize winner this year was Gerry Cantwell who was 3rd over 50 in a time of 60.54 great running from the Helvick Man. In the Ladies race victory went to Rose Mary Ryan Bilboa for the first time in 56.48 finishing 24th overall in the race, Rose Mary was second in Ballycotton back in 2004 she had also the previous Sunday won the Adare 10k in a time of 35.32 and is now hoping to qualify for Beijing Olympics when she will have a crack at the qualifying time for the marathon in San Diego in June. Current National marathon champion Pauline Curley Tullamore was hoping to achieve a three in a row in the Ballycotton 10 having won in 2006 and 2007 but had to settle for second place on the day with a time of 58.51,Third Lady was Louise Cavanagh of U.C.D.1.00.56.West Waterford’s first lady finisher was Diane Behan who clocked 73.25. The clubs Paddy Joe Delaney memorial shield was presented by club vice chairman Albert McGrath to this years winner and first club finisher Raivis Zakis.Raivis is the first athlete now to have won this shield in honour of the late great Paddy Joe Delaney three times 2005-2006 and 2008.Well done to Raivis on another great run last Sunday. FINE TUNING AT LEINSTER MASTERS FOR MORAN AND GOUGH.
French bound master athletes Brendan Moran and Joe Gough competed, as guests, in the Leinster Master Indoor Championships in Nenagh last Sunday in order to put the final touches to their racing sharpness before heading off to the World Master Championships in France this week end. First out of the blocks in Nenagh was Brendan Moran who demonstrated such fine strength, poise and composure in winning the 60 meters dash, beating athletes much younger then him, to win his first gold medal in a Leinster Championships, Brendan is in fine form at the right time and he will no doubt represent his club and country with style and panache on the world athletic stage. Next up for West Waterford A C was Joe Gough who was entered in the 400 meters in a bid to hone his racing skills before he travels with the Irish team next Sunday. Competing with athletes ten years younger then him Joe showed that his training is at a peak when he out paced his rivals and sprinted to victory in one of the fasted times of the day. This was Gough’s sixth race of the indoor season and he was very pleased to make it his sixth win. All that remains for the two athletes to complete now is their final week of training, making sure they get plenty of rest and to prepare mentally for the challenges that lie ahead. Brendan Moran and Joe Gough can travel to the World Championships knowing that they have the support of all in West Waterford and are confident that they have prepared themselves to the best of their ability, which will allow them to compete with the best in the world and race with true Deise spirit and hope in their hearts.
