Five Gold Medals for Darren Doherty at Day 2 of the County Track & Field Championships

Darren Doherty had a great day at the second session of the county championships winning four individual gold medals in the 75m hurdles, 200m, long Jump and s

hot under 14 and also anchoring the relay team of Peter Ahearn, Fergus Donnelly and Mario Zakis to gold in the relay.  Mario also won another gold in the boys under 13 shot. Other winners on the track were Finlidh O hUllachain in the under 11 hurdles, Sarah O’Riordan youths 800m and Naoise Mac Mhurchadha youths 800m. In the throwing events Lochlann Hurney won gold in the hammer under 14 as did Saoirse Quinn in the junior women’s discus and Lauren Cliffe in the youths javelin.  

Gold Clean Sweep for West Waterford Athletes in the Race walking events.

West Waterford had three athletes entered in the race walking events and they all came home with county titles. Sopie Beresford led the field and was a clear winner in the under 15 girls 2000m. In the longer 3000m walk Eabha Hickey won the youth’s event and Doireann Hickey took gold in the junior event.

Silver medals were won by Jarleth Hurney under 12 shot, Kevin Russell under 13 60m hurdles, Fergus Donnelly under 14 200m, Lochlann Hurney under 14 shot, Naoise Mac Mhurchadha youths 3000m and Lauren Cliffe discus under 16.

Mario Zakis added a bronze in the 200m to his gold in the shot and Eoghan Kenny finished 3rd in the under 13 shot. Ava Kiely put in a strong performance to take bronze in the under 14 200m. Peter Ahearn won three bronze medals in the hammer, high jump and 200m. Fergus Donnelly completed a complete set of medals with a silver in the long jump. Ruby Stockwell finished 3rd in the 75m hurdles as did Kasey Connors in the 200m under 15 and Sarah O’Riordan finished off her day with bronze in both the discus and javelin.

Well done to all our athletes who represented their club over the two days of the county championships.

123.ie Munster Schools Championships in Templemore On Saturday Next

The 123.ie Munster Schools Championships take place in Tullamore and athletes from West Waterford will represent all the local schools in running walking and throwing events. The field events get underway at 10.00 am and the track at 11am.  In the throwing events Saoirse Quinn, Michalina Goclik, Eoghan O’Brien and David Conroy Fahey will all represent St Augustine’s

First on the track will be the race walkers with Sophie Beresford (St Augustine’s) Eabha Hickey (Dungarvan College) and Doireann Hickey ( Meanscoil san Nioclas) all competing. Siun Cunning and Ruby Stockwell will compete for St Augustine’s in the 75m hurdles. In the middle distance Noah Commins  and Isabelle Gaffney will represent St Augustine’s in the 800m and Noah will also compete in the 1500m.  Naoise and Dualta Mac Mhurchadha will compete with Meanscoil san Nioclas in the 5,000m with Naoise also qualified in the 1500m and Graiine Moore will take part in the 3000m for St Augustine’s and Isabelle Gaffney will also compete in the triple jump. There will also be several more athletes competing in the relays with St Augustine’s

Best of luck to all competing. The first two in the laned events and the first three in all other events will qualify for the 123.ie All Ireland Championships at the end of the month. The timetable for Saturday can be viewed on the Munster Schools athletics facebook page.

Fun Day at Finisk Valley

A few weeks ago Blackwater hosted a funday in Lismore. WWAC had 5 athletes present and a great day was had by all competing in running jumping and throwing. This event clashed with the festival of food so a lot of out younger athletes missed out on the event. Now there is another chance to have a go as Finisk Valley will host a fun day for under 9, 10 and 11 athletes on Sunday next May 20th.

Primary Schools Sports Heats on Thursday next May 16th

West Waterford AC will host the heats of the Primary School Sports on Thusday next May 16th in St Augustine’s College. There will be twelve local schools competing for places in the Western Final. The younger groups will be lining up for the sprints @6.15 and the event will get underway @6.30sharp. Please leave plenty of time for parking and getting to the start. There will be a 5euro charge for adults. Cash only on the night.
