Wins for Sophie and Isabelle at 123.ie Munster Schools Championships

It was a cool and cloudy day last Saturday as over 600 of the best schools athletes  converged on Templemore for the 123.ie Munster Schools Championship. As usual competition was keen in all age group but especially so in the intermediate age group. The first two in the sprint events and the first three in all other events qualified to compete in the 123.ie All Ireland Schools Championships in Tullamore at the end of the month.

Gold and Silver in the Race Waling Events

First on the track were the race walkers and Sophie Beresford representing St. Augustine’s made it a winning start taking gold in the junior girls with a new personal best of 5.43.92.  Doireann Hickey in the colours of Meansscoil san Nioclas had to work hard over the 3000m to secure silver in the senior girls event and Eabha Hickey came home 7th in a very fast inter girls event.

Silver for Saoirse and Bronze for Michalina in the Throws

The throwing events got underway early with the first of the hammers underway at 10am. After a 4th place finish in the hammer Saoire Quinn upper her game in the Discus to finish 2nd with a throw of 28.06. Michalina Goclik had to pull out all the stops in her final throw to take bronze in the junior Shot Putt.

Isabelle Jumps to Gold in the Triple Jump

Isabelle Gaffney turned her attention to the field events where a leap of 9m.41 saw her take gols in the triple jump. She followed this up with a 3rd place finish in the 800m and also anchored the St Augustine’s relay team to 3rd . Kasey Connors was also a member of the bronze winning team. Other performances in the middle distance events were 5th for Noah Commins in the Inter 800m and  6th  in the 1500m, 6th for Grainne Moore in senior 3000m,  5th for Naoise MacMhurchadha in the senior 1500m and 5000m and 7th for Dualta Mac Mhurchadha in the senior 5000m.

First Munster Medal for Ruby Stockwell

Competing in her first Munster championships and representing St Augustine’s Ruby Stockwell ran a great sprint hurdles event to take a bronze medal. Suin Cunningham finished 5th in the same event and both girls were members of the St Augustines minor team that took gold in the relay.

Well done to all the athletes who represented the local schools in the event.

Sophie, Doireann, Saoirse, Michalina, Isabelle, will all compete in the All Ireland Schools Championships in their individual events and Ruby and Suin will represent St Augustine’s in the relay.

Fun Day in Finisk Valley

Just a few athletes from West Waterford made it to the Finisk valley Fun Day but a great day was had by those who made the trip. Welldone to Jamie David and Bethanne.
